EVENTS - Gilbert White's HouseCalendar of Events 2007 Please check with the museum or visit our website regularly to see other events and updates throughout the year. Please phone the museum on 01420 511275 or check the website: www.gilbertwhiteshouse.org.uk February Monday 12th February 10am – 4pm An Introduction to Hedge Laying with Simon Farndon and Robert Saltmarsh A garden-based day of learning the ancient art of hedge laying. This will give you a hands-on opportunity to learn from a past master, and to have a go yourself, in a safe environment. A must for anyone wanting to learn a practical new skill for the garden. Dress for mess and appropriately for the weather. £45 Thursday 15th February 10am – 4pm An Introduction to Wax Painting with Carol Ellis The day starts with demonstrations from Carol Ellis, from Art of Wax, showing you how to melt coloured wax blocks onto the low-heat iron. Then have a go at abstract patterns. In the afternoon, you can progress to landscapes – it really is that easy! Everyone can express themselves using the encaustic art wax process. Suitable for all levels of ability. All tools and materials are provided. £45 Monday 19th February 10am – 4pm Make a Wall Hanging with Carole Woods Have a go at painting fabrics and making a small floral wall hanging using traditional English patchwork over papers. Several designs to choose from, or invent your own. £45 March Tuesday 13th – Saturday 31st March Tuesday to Sunday 11am – 5pm Exhibition: Julian Marshall – Arctic Adventures Taking her inspiration from trips to the Arctic over the past 6 years, Julian presents paintings and screenprints with ice as her theme. She says: “I felt miniscule and totally insignificant in the vastness of the landscape. The emptiness and silence was something I’d never experienced before. The contrast of the glittering ice against the dark rock of the brooding mountains fired my imagination”. Usual museum entry charges apply. Monday 26th March 10am – 4pm The History of Gilbert White’s Garden with David Standing. Explore the history and development of an English garden, in particular one of the most famous in Hampshire, Gilbert White’s intriguing and whimsical landscaped park. Discover what flowers, fruits and follies he used to create a magical atmosphere and a wonderful, varied landscape. £45 April Monday 16th April 10am – 4pm Bead Craft with Carole Woods Make and take home a beaded amulet purse. Course fee includes a complete kit with 3 sets of beads, thread, needle and fringe beads – all you need to do is tell us your preferred colour! £45 Saturday 21st – Sunday 29th April Tuesday to Sunday 11am – 5pm Exhibition: James Marnan Selborne artist James Marnan returns to the museum with an array of paintings, drawings and prints inspired by the local scenery. Artworks will be available for sale. Usual museum entry charges apply. MayFriday 11th May 6am Early Morning Bird Call Walk with Dr. John Eyre, Chairman of Hampshire Ornithological Society. Benefit from John’s broad knowledge of bird life on a guided walk through the Selborne countryside to hear the dawn chorus. Dress for walking and appropriately for the weather. Includes a hearty breakfast afterwards in our Tea Parlour. £25 Tuesday 15th May 10am – 4pm The Fragrant Cottage Garden with David Standing. How to fill the garden with sweet-smelling flowers. Many beautiful, fragrant and unusual plants once grown in our gardens are now rarely seen. This course investigates old favourites such as cabbage roses, laced pinks and sweet violets, and suggests how they may be used to create a delightfully perfumed cottage garden. £45 Saturday 19th – Thursday 31st May Tuesday to Sunday 11am – 5pm Exhibition: Jane Hodge Landscape-based prints and drawings, inspired by the natural environment around the northerly South Downs. A recurring motif is hedgerow – a “large” entity which is made from individual plants with leaves, branches, sap and roots, and which houses insects, lichen, fungi, with everything humming in the regenerating dance of growth, decay and regrowth. Usual museum entry charges apply. JuneMonday 4th June 10am – 4pm Birds by Sight and Sound with Dr. John Eyre. A day spent in the Selborne countryside with one of the region’s leading ornithologists. Learn to identify common British birds by their song as well as their appearance, and discover which species were common in Gilbert White’s day. Dress for walking and appropriately for the weather. Binoculars recommended. £45 Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th June 11am – 5pm each day Unusual Plants Fair A plethora of plants that you are unlikely to find in general garden centres. Specialist nurseries and suppliers, beautiful displays, refreshments, and a plant crèche for your bulkier purchases. All in our lovely parkland setting. Browse at your leisure, and stock up your garden for the summer. Free parking in our field. Tuesday 19th June 7.30pm Summer Lecture in the Marquee Celebrity guest still to be confirmed. Previous speakers include Alan Titchmarsh and Chris Packham, so expect a very entertaining evening out! Wine and nibbles served in the interval, all included in the ticket price. £15 Saturday 23rd June 10am – 4pm Watercolour Workshop with Jan Harbon This workshop with renowned botanic artist Jan Harbon explores a loose yet controlled manner of painting some of the flowers from Gilbert White’s garden. Techniques, colour, and composition will be covered, plus there will be the opportunity to use additional collage material, metal leaf, etc. All levels of ability welcome. £45 Saturday 30th June & Sunday 1st July 11am – 5pm each day New France Old England New France Old England colourfully brings the 18th Century alive, recreating life in Colonial North America during the seven years war. During 1754 and 1755, Britain suffered its worst military defeat in its history, as three great nations clashed in North America. Britain wished to expand its colonies; France wished to connect theirs; and Native people wished merely to survive. Visit and talk to Native people, civilians and the Military units. Take part in the odd cricket match and other games, as well as drilling the units. Camping and cooking are all part of camp life. Each day there will be a full drill display involving all the units, with firing displays, and demonstrations on tactics employed during the period, with the day finishing with a skirmish. Children are encouraged to “join” the militia, and they can have a go with “dummy” muskets. A must for history enthusiasts, and a bit of fun for everyone. The activities are included in your admission price. Free parking in our field. JulySunday 22nd July 11am – 5pm Gilbert White Day Gilbert White Day is celebrated by the museum every year on the Sunday nearest to Gilbert White’s birthday, 18th July. A good chance to use those cotton fabric leftovers. You will need to bring your own sewing machine, which must be electrically tested and have a current PAT certificate. (Ring the museum for details). £45 Wednesday 25th July 9.30am - 12.30pm Wriggly Days for all the family at the Field Studies Centre. Hunt for wrigglies under the dead leaves and in the pond and then use microscopes to study them. For children aged 5 to 11, to be accompanied by an adult please. Sunday 29th July Gates open 5.30pm for 6.30pm start. Jack & The Beanstalk Chapterhouse Theatre Company is proud to present another classic fairy tale, specially adapted for the outdoor stage. Join brave Jack as he meets all manner of wonderful and strange characters in a story of magic beans, a huge plant, and a fearsome giant. A play for children of all ages. Wednesday 8th August 10am - 12pm & 1pm - 3pm Rural Areas Play Project (RAPP) A van load of fun! Come for the morning, or the afternoon, or both! Morning activities include "Wrigglies Under Our Feet", or spend the afternoon finding out how animals "Chomp, Munch and Crunch"! There will be loads of fun activities and games to play, all in the RAPP van. In good weather, activities will take place outside. Please remember hats, t-shirts and sun cream for children. Organised by East Hampshire District Council, and supported by Hampshire County Council and the Early Education & Childcare Unit. For children aged 4 to 11 accompanied by an adult please.

SeptemberSaturday 1st September 10am – 4pm An Introduction to Beekeeping with Karin Anderson-Lauritzen Join our local expert for a day learning about bees and the way they live. This course will enlighten you about the basics of beekeeping, including types of hives, equipment, bee varieties, and how to get started. Karin will bring some of her own bees in an observation hive, giving you a chance to get close to real bees in a safe environment. Very suitable for adults and children alike. (Children must be accompanied by an adult). £45 Saturday 8th September 11am – 5pm Heritage Open Day Come and see behind the scenes at the museum! Various out-buildings will be opened for the day, including Gilbert White’s brew house. Free tours of the garden and introductory museum talks. Usual museum entry charges apply. Monday 17th September 10am – 4pm Imaginative Planting: Right Plant, Right Place with David Standing Dry shade; sunny bank; heavy clay – what will grow? choosing plants that thrive in particular places is a problem that forms the focus of this course. Suitable plants to overcome such difficulties will be suggested. £45 Saturday 29th September 1.30pm – 4.30pm Fungi Walk with Phil Budd Back by popular demand! Forage for fungi in the beautiful Selborne countryside with Phil Budd, who will help you identify and confirm different varieties. After a good walk, return to the Museum for wild mushroom tasting, followed by afternoon tea. Then you are free to look round the house and gardens until 5pm. £25 October Saturday 6th – Wednesday 31st October Tuesday to Sunday 11am – 5pm Exhibition: The Oates Family in Africa The 2007 in-house exhibition explores which members of the Oates family visited Africa and what they did there. Includes new material from Frank Oates’ expeditions, and an insight into Captain Lawrence Oates’ Army career. Usual museum entry charges apply. Monday 15th October 10am – 2pm Who Was Gilbert White? with Maria Newbery and David Standing Join us on an exclusive tour of Gilbert White’s house and grounds while we are closed to the public. Find out what he achieved here in Selborne during the 18th century, and how he was the David Attenborough of his time. £25, to include morning coffee and a light lunch. Monday 22nd October 10am – 4pm Crazy Heart Pincushion with Carole Woods Make a crazy heart-shaped pincushion. A chance to let your imagination go wild with all those fancy threads, fabrics & beads in your bit box. £45 November Saturday 3rd November 1.30pm – 4.30pm Fungi Walk with Phil Budd Your second chance this year to forage for fungi in the beautiful Selborne countryside with Phil Budd, who will help you identify and confirm different varieties. Friday 9th – Sunday 11th November Tuesday to Sunday 11am – 5pm Exhibition: The Wakes’ Quilters A rare chance to view the handiwork of the industrious Wakes’ Quilters, who meet monthly at the museum to learn and improve techniques. All sorts of themes, from summer flowers to autumn leaves and Christmas are blended in a variety of media – quilts, cushions, dolls, even fabric postcards – to make up a fascinating and colourful collection. Usual museum entry charges apply. Monday 19th November 10am – 4pm Christmas Crafts with Carole Woods Make and take home baubles and beautiful creations for Christmas. Decorations will be crafted from fabrics & silks of your choice. A chance to learn a new skill while creating something Christmassy for your home. £45 December Sunday 2nd December 11am – 5pm Mulled Wine Day As the aroma of spices and wine fill the house, we will take you back in time to Christmases past. Each room is adorned in festive decorations according to its period. With stunning floral displays, costumed staff, and 18th century-style mince pies, Mulled Wine Day is a treat that will get you in the mood for the festive season. Free entry for all to museum and garden.
